Mental Health and Employment: A Bounding Approach Using Panel Data*
نویسندگان
چکیده
The effect of mental health on employment is a key policy question, but reliable causal estimates are elusive. Exploiting panel data and extending recent techniques using selection observables to provide information along unobservables, we estimate that transitioning into poor leads 1.6% point reduction in the probability employment; approximately 10% raw gap. Selection almost entirely based time-invariant characteristics, rendering fixed effects unbiased this context, meaning researchers no longer have rely narrow local average treatment most health/work IV studies.

Is temporary employment a cause or consequence of poor mental health? A panel data analysis.
Mental health status has an association with labour market outcomes. If people in temporary employment have poorer mental health than those in permanent employment then it is consistent with two mutually inclusive possibilities: temporary employment generates adverse mental health effects and/or individuals with poorer mental health select into temporary from permanent employment. We apply regr...

متن کاملMental health expenditure in England: a spatial panel approach.
We empirically investigate the determinants of local authority mental health expenditure in England. We adopt a reduced form demand and supply model, extended to incorporate possible interaction among authorities, as well as unobserved heterogeneity. The model is estimated using an annual panel dataset that allows us to explore both time-series and cross-municipality variation in mental health ...

Labour Turnover and the Spatial Distribution of Unemployment: A Panel Data Analysis Using Employment Registry Data This paper aims to study whether the local variation in unemployment rates is related to labour turnover and what is the sign of such relationship. In addition, the paper aims to assess the relative impact of inflow and outflow from unemployment on the dynamics of the local unemplo...
